In addition to ferns we also offer a wide range of premium specimen trees and shrubs, including Magnolias, Flowering Cherry trees, Maples, and many more. Browse our Products section or if you’re near Cambridge, call in and see what’s currently available.

We also stock an extensive range of large-grade Citrus trees. All of our citrus trees are grown in 25 litre bags and are typically sold only after around 18 months of growth, ensuring you receive a healthy, mature plant.

About Fronds

Fronds NZ Ltd is a specialist fern nursery based in Cambridge, New Zealand, approximately 140 km south of Auckland. We supply wholesale ferns, large-grade specimen trees and shrubs to retail nurseries, landscapers and garden centres throughout New Zealand. Our nursery spans approximately 2.5 acres of shade house, with between 35,000 and 45,000 ferns growing at any one time.

Many of our ferns are sustainably sourced from pine forests under an approved permit system. As these forests are harvested, the ferns would otherwise be destroyed. Instead, they are carefully rescued, replanted at our nursery and grown on before being supplied throughout the country.

Alongside our fern collection, we grow large-grade native and exotic specimen trees, with a particular focus on Maples and Prunus. We also stock mature fruit trees, including over 25 varieties of citrus, as well as Feijoas and Persimmons.

Growing specialist ferns for over 35 years

Fronds is proudly one of New Zealand’s largest specialist fern nurseries. As more New Zealanders recognise the importance of preserving our unique native landscapes, ferns continue to be a popular choice for home gardens, public spaces and landscape projects throughout the country.

New Zealand ferns are also gaining international recognition for their distinctive beauty and versatility.

Pricing and availability

Because customer requirements vary widely, standard pricing and availability are not listed online. Add the plants you are interested in to an enquiry, include your details and notes, and send it to the Fronds team.

Ordering within New Zealand and exporting

Smaller grades are generally sent by courier. Larger grades use specialist plant transporters or freight companies. Fronds will obtain a delivery quote and agree the freight charge and date before finalising an order.

South Island freight can be expensive, but Fronds can obtain a quote on request. International export is not currently available because of the difficulty of removing unwanted pests before shipment.

Plant care and planting

Most ferns prefer shade, protection from wind and consistent deep watering. Free-draining, compost-enriched soil and mulch help roots remain cool and moist. Avoid overwatering the crown and avoid fertilisers that may burn roots.
